Hello, I’m Hanife Berre, and I’d like to share a meaningful experience that has left a lasting mark
on my personal and professional development. I had the opportunity to participate in the
Erasmus+ KA153 project titled “Digital Version of Volunteering”, organized by the Paydaş Eğitim
Kültür ve Sanat Association. In this piece, I want to talk about what I learned, how I felt, and what
this project has contributed to my life.
Discovering Digital Volunteering in the Digital Age
Although I was born into the digital era, the concept of digital volunteering was quite unfamiliar
to me before this project. Like many, I used to associate volunteering with physical presence and
hands-on activities. However, this project broadened my understanding and made me realize
how volunteering can also take place effectively in digital environments. From the very first day,
we were introduced to inspiring trainers who equipped us with in depth knowledge about digital
volunteeringhow to engage in it, which platforms to use, and how to harness technology to serve
our communities.
Learning What I Didn’t Even Know I Needed
As a future English teacher, I was thrilled to learn about various digital tools and applications
many of which I had never explored before. These tools, which can be integrated into
educational settings, gave me new ideas on how to enrich my future lessons. More importantly,
I’ve started to view technology not just as something to consume, but as a means to create and
contribute. That shift in perspective is something I deeply value.
Cultural Exploration in My Hometown: Zonguldak
One of the most special aspects of this project was the chance to connect with participants
from different countries. Although I was born and raised in Zonguldak, it felt like I was
rediscovering my city through new eyes. We explored places I had never visited before, and
sharing that experience with international friends made it all the more enjoyable. Introducing my
culture to others made me feel proud and responsible it was like fulfilling a sacred duty.
Alongside my fellow Turkish participants, we did our best to represent our culture with pride and
authenticity.
A Project Full of Memories
The interactive activities we engaged in during the project were not only educational but also
unforgettable. One of my favorite moments was explaining the traditional Turkish henna night to
our international friends. But we didn’t just explain we enacted it! We chose a “bride,” a “groom,”
and even a “mother-in-law” from among the participants and performed a small skit. I believe
this hands on experience left a stronger impression than any explanation ever could.
Intercultural Night: Where Cultures United
The most vibrant night of the project was definitely Intercultural Night. We had the chance to
experience different countries’ cultures, taste their local dishes, and learn their traditional
dances. Sharing our own food, music, and dances added so much joy to the evening. Dancing
together, eating together, and laughing together reminded me how powerful and unifying cultural
exchange can be.
Finding My English Voice
One of the most valuable takeaways from this project was improving my English speaking skills.
Although I study in an English department, I rarely had the chance to speak English in daily life.
At first, I was unsure whether I’d be able to communicate effectively. But over time, I found
myself speaking more fluently and confidently. By the end of the project, I was surprised at how
comfortable I felt using English, and this gave a huge boost to my self-confidence.
A Journey of Self-Discovery
Perhaps the most personal gain of this project was discovering new sides of myself. I had always
thought I was shy in crowds or hesitant to speak in front of others. But this project helped me
realize that I’m actually more social, courageous, and capable than I thought. I made new
friends, communicated with people from different backgrounds, and expressed myself with
ease. Most importantly, I learned that stepping out of my comfort zone can lead to incredible
growth.
A Difficult Choice That Turned Out Right
I must admit, I hesitated before joining the project because my exams were scheduled to start
just one day after it ended. But when I thought about the potential value of this experience, I
decided to go for it. Looking back now, I’m so glad I did. This project gave me knowledge,
friendships, memories, and self-confidence all in one package.
My Deepest Thanks
I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to the Paydaş Eğitim Kültür ve Sanat Association as
well as the trainers and participants who made this experience so meaningful. I’ll always cherish
this project as a turning point in my life, one that opened my eyes to new perspectives and
helped me grow in ways I never expected.
